the sled team

The first dog team to conquer the dangerous Dyatlov Pass!

The Urals conquered the legendary Dyatlov Pass on dog sleds. Three sledges were dragged by 24 sled dogs. They covered the path from the base in the village of Vizhay to the pass and back in five days, covering a total of 250 km. Thrill-seekers followed in the footsteps of a film crew from the United States, moving on snowmobiles. A strong snowstorm, which raged for two days - on March 6 and 7, prevented them from going faster. He forced the mushers to lower the dogs into the valley of the Lozva River to Ilyich's Izba. The route ran mainly along the river valley with picturesque rocky shores: taiga landscapes gave way to endless swamps, in places there were sheer limestone cliffs with caves; along the spurs of the Poyasovyi Kamen ridge, through the mountain taiga and rocky plateaus in the vicinity of Mount Kholat-Chakhl (1096.7 m), north of the sources of the Auspiya River.

Of the wild animals of the expedition, one wolverine was encountered, whichcrossed the Lozva River. Wolves, which were feared by tourists, did notmeet. On the way back to Vizhay, we encountered another difficulty - water thatappeared in places on top of the ice on the Lozva River. Extreme sportsmen hadto stop more often and clean the ice on the paws of dogs. The indigenous people of these places - the Mansi - were very hospitable. In the village of Ushma, the entire expedition team spent the night in a warmMansi hut and even went to the bathhouse.

45-degree frost, lack of navigation and lack of food. Behind three days and almost 100 kilometers of travel. Perhaps, no one has yet conquered the famous Dyatlov Pass. On sled dogs. In abnormal frosts. Virtually no outside help. They decided to go almost according to the classical scheme: three, not counting dogs, huskies and malamutes. Preparations for an extreme trip began in the autumn. We trained ourselves. And don't forget about the dogs.Driving sled dogs is an art. Firstly, it is almost impossible to force them to do anything, you need to be able to negotiate.

A separate science is the arrangement in a team. Forward, as a rule, put leaders, those who will carry out the commands of the musher. Well, and then the strongest, those who can pull the entire team. And already at the start, the first tests were waiting for the travelers.
“We found out that a group of skiers was evacuated from there, then the skier was taken away before our eyes with frostbite on her hands, it was already uncomfortable, well, we already decided anyway, we must go,” recalls Sergey Ulitin, a musher.

From the starting point to the pass is more than 100 kilometers. During the day they managed to pass no more than 40. They made their way mainly over rough terrain. But the most difficult stage is the climb up the mountain. Here, even hardy sled dogs did not immediately cope. Already at the pass itself, the navigator began to fail. I had to go almost blind. And all around is a solid white desert

And all around is a solid white desert.-The crooked forest is already beginning, these birch trees are crooked, small, you walk with dogs, you talk like with your companions, like that, all the guys, let's go, here it is, the top, here we are, and you understand that this is not the top, and the descent begins again, - says Sergey Ulitin, a musher. We got there. Despite the fatigue and lack of food. And after all, all this time it was necessary to cheer not only each other.- Along the way, we even sang songs, Albert laughed at me, laughed, shooting a video, he says, Ilya, what are you doing, I say, I sing songs, because they perceive, as if cheering, well, then I look, Albert sang a song for us,” says Ilya Aristov, a musher. Now I plan to go even further. Conquer the Manpupuner Plateau. Usually tourists are thrown there by helicopter. But these guys think that the helicopter is good, but the dogs are much better.
